The Online Film Critics Society
About the OFCS
Founded in 1997, the Online Film Critics Society (OFCS) is the professional association for film journalists, scholars and historians who publish their reviews, interviews and essays exclusively or primarily in the online media. The mission of the society is to further the growth of an informed film audience through the online media and to promote awareness of the Internet as a viable media alternative.
Admission is open to writers who are affiliated with an online magazine, news service or information resource. Members are required to vote for the year-end OFCS Awards and to post their reviews to the OFCS web site. There is no fee for membership, which is open to writers working in any language and publishing from any country around the world.
Membership applications are accepted between January and August of each year. Writers who wish to apply should send their full contact data: name, mailing address, telephone number, e-mail and the URL(s) where their reviews are published. This information should be sent to admissions@ofcs.org. Do not send applications for membership consideration from August 1 to January 1. They will not be accepted during this period.
Writers who wish to apply must maintain an annual online publication quota of at least 50 professional-level reviews, no less than 400 words per review, in order to be eligible for consideration. The current membership standards (as outlined by the OFCS Governing Committee) include the following criteria:
Reviews, articles, and the web site should be of a professional level quality. (Roughly 40%)
Reviews, and articles should be comprehensive, or ones that fill an under-served niche. (Roughly 30%)
The member should offer meaningful contributions to film criticism and the OFCS. (Roughly 20%)
The member's written work or web site should have outstanding features. (Roughly 10%)
The OFCS Governing Committee will periodically review the content of existing member sites to verify each standard member still qualifies for membership. For full information on the internal workings of the OFCS, click here to read the OFCS Bylaws.
